The holidays are here! Whether you’re staying home or taking a trip, there’s no need to be bored with the myriad of unique experiences you can try with your family.
Here are our top 5 fun adventures to do with your family in Austin this holiday. They’re challenging, exciting, packed with great photo opportunities, and will have the kids sleeping extra well at night!
#1 – Camping & Kayaking
Outdoorsy families will love this wild experience. It’s filled with fun, but also requires a tight-knit trust of each other – perfect for close families! Kayaking is also a great way to explore nature where you can take in the sights and sounds.
Plan a weekend camping trip to Pedernales Falls State Park, where you can paddle your way through nature to reach your destination. Pair family members up in tandem kayaks for some friendly competition, games and bonding time while you paddle downstream.
Kayaking is low impact and doesn’t require much strength, so it can be enjoyed by every member of the family, from toddler to grandparent. It’s also a great way to reduce your stress, provides an escape from technology and you can get your kids involved in the great outdoors.
#2 – A Family Fishing Trip
Is there anything cuter than when your kids catch their first fish? A family fishing trip could be the chance to share one of your passions with the rest of your family and an opportunity to teach your kids how to fish.
Showing your children how to find fish on the fish finder or showing them different species of fish as you catch them could make for a fun and educational trip. For some extra fun, instead of fishing from the shore, load your fishing gear into the kayaks and head out into the water.
Create some competition about who can catch the most fish or see who can catch the biggest fish for the day. Take lots of photos of your kids trying to catch or catching their first fish.
#3 – Take A Road Trip
If you feel like getting away from home and experiencing a myriad of interesting, educational things along the way, a road trip could be a great choice for your family.
Get everyone together, choose a destination like Blue Hole Regional Park and let each member of the family choose an activity or place to see on the way.
Pack the tent or load the RV as you can take anything with on a road trip. Maybe you want to get out and ride the bike trails or go off-roading in a 4×4. Wherever you choose to go, you’ll be creating memories and bonding with your loved ones.
#4 – Rock Climbing
If a desert adventure sounds like your thing, rock climbing could be an exciting experience for the family. This is a great way to challenge your family and for you to get out into nature.
Take the rock climbing course at Enchanted Rock, where your kids can learn about rappelling, foot-work and hand jams. Here you’ll be taught all the fundamentals that you’d need to climb in a crack, as well as basic climbing techniques. You and your loved ones will be amazed at the spectacular scenery all around you.
Most rock climbing courses will offer a half-day or full-day course and all gear is provided. All you need to do is wear comfortable clothing that’s fast-drying and comfortable shoes like running shoes.
Rock climbing can be enjoyed by every family member, including younger children.
#5 – A Day At The Lake
In the summertime, head down to Lady Bird Lake. With a ban on motorized boats, you can take a canoe or kayak out on the water. If you want a different experience, go for a full moon paddle on the lake.
If you’re brave enough, you can paddle out to Congress Avenue bridge and watch the Mexican free-tailed bats have a feast. You would be able to see them between March and November.
After a day of paddling, enjoy dinner on one of the cruises, where you can watch the sunset from the deck. If you’re lucky, you’ll get to admire the downtown city skyline as the sunsets.
Austin has a variety of family activities that you can do, from zip-lining through treetops to hiking in the tropical forest of Palmetto State Park. There’s something unique and exciting right around the corner for you to experience with your family.
If you’re willing to travel a little for adventure’s sake, your options are almost endless! Why not see how many of these you can tick off your bucket list?
